For over 40 years, the American Bankers Association’s Principles of Banking has been respected as the most comprehensive introduction to the banking industry. Thorough, easily digestible, and detailed, this textbook and course provide an overall understanding of the financial services industry. The Mississippi Bankers Association is proud to offer the Principles of Banking Course beginning on Thursday, August 26.
Program Overview:
Principles of Banking will provide an overview of fundamental banking concepts and principles in a convenient instructor-led remote environment that incorporates peer collaboration and individual bank research. The course will run 10 weeks and include weekly assignments, weekly quizzes, a midterm exam and a final exam. The course size is limited to 30 participants.

- Overview of banking functions, competitors and future trends
- Review of banking history including legislation, regulations and regulatory agencies
- Breakdown of bank financials – income statement, balance sheet and bank performance metrics
- Products and services – deposits, loans, financial planning, trust services and business banking
- Digital banking – payment systems, online banking, mobile banking and remote capture
- Enhancing customer relationships – bank involvement in the community, importance of cross-selling and relationship building as well as exceeding customer expectations
- The safeguarding of banks, their employees and their customers – fraud, corporate governance, privacy and cybersecurity risks

Principles of Banking has direct applicability to a broad range of banking positions. This course will benefit:
- New bankers needing a broad knowledge of the banking industry
- Emerging bankers desiring a general understanding of the financial services industry
- Seasoned bankers seeking to gain a broader understanding of the banking industry
- Any banker who would benefit from an understanding of the changing world of financial services
Format:
Principles of Banking will be delivered on a video-conferencing platform. Each week participants will log into a 2-hour live session. These sessions are instructor-led and the faculty is comprised of seasoned MBA banks or industry partners. Participants will be able to see the instructor and participate in an interactive question and answer format. All students must be able to utilize video during the class. Students are required to be on camera for at least part of every session.
Prior to the course start date, participants will receive a 12th edition PRINCIPLES OF BANKING textbook and course curriculum. The option for a soft-cover textbook or e-book is available.
- Participants will be expected to read each assigned chapter(s) and complete any assignments prior to the next week’s class.
- Assignments will be reviewed and returned the week following their submission.
- The midterm and final exam will be electronic and participants will have a window in which to complete them.

Freddie J. Bagley is Chairman of the Board for Community Bank of Mississippi as well as Community Bancshares, Inc., the parent company of Community Bank of Mississippi, where he has also served in many capacities of the bank over the past 44 years with 20 of those years as Chief Executive Officer.
Under his leadership, Community Bank has become one of Mississippi’s largest banks and expanded into Tennessee, Alabama and Florida. In addition, during his tenure, Community Bank has regularly been named one of Mississippi’s “Fastest-Growing Private Companies” and “Best Places to Work” by The Mississippi Business Journal.

Brooks Campany serves as Regional Manager for Argent Trust Company’s offices in Oxford and Jackson, Mississippi and Memphis, Tennessee with direct management over the Oxford market.
Brooks expanded the Oxford office in late 2018 after working in our Nashville office for eight years. In her role as Regional Manager, she will direct, manage, and develop strategic direction to the talented and credentialed team in Oxford, Jackson, and Memphis that share her focus on creating an exceptional experience for clients. In addition, Brooks will work closely with our business line leaders in other markets to develop business and bring value and expertise to clients. Brooks also oversees Argent’s financial planning services. She started with Argent in 2009 and has passed Cannon Financial Institution Trust I School and Cannon Certified Wealth Strategist I School. Prior to working for Argent, Brooks worked for Avenue Bank in Nashville, TN as a personal banker.
Her work in her industry and community has resulted in many recognitions throughout her career. In 2016 Brooks received the Women of Influence Dynamic Duo Award from the Nashville Business Journal, recognized as one of Nashville’s Top 30 under 30 in 2012, and was selected to be part of the Young Leadership Council of Nashville in 2013. She was selected as the junior board member of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation after her work with Circle of Hope. Brooks serves on the Board Guardianship & Trust Corp where she is the acting Vice President and serves on the board of directors for The Association of Trust Organizations, which is a national organization of independently owned trust companies.
Brooks lives in Oxford with her husband, Port, and their sons, Porter and Wills. In her time away from work, she loves spending time with family and friends, being active outdoors, and going to Ole Miss football games.

Eric Eaton is Vice President & Banking Services Director at BankPlus. Banking Services acts as a liaison between support departments and the front line branch bankers at BankPlus. We strive every day to deliver proactive guidance for various corporate initiatives and excellent customer service in supporting our bankers in the field. Banking Services also seeks to streamline processes and procedures to enable our bankers to better serve their customers on a daily basis. We also help sustain High Performing employees by working directly with the BankPlus Education and Human Resources Teams. Through this model, the teams are able to Obtain, Train, and Sustain the best bankers in the industry. Banking Services has 80 banking locations to support in a three-state footprint in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama.

Christopher J. Estrade currently serves as the Vice President and Financial Center Manager of Hancock Whitney Bank’s Gulfport Main Financial Center. The Bay St. Louis native graduated from Saint Stanislaus College then earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and a Master of Business Administration from William Carey University. Additionally, he completed Hancock Whitney’s Commercial Credit School in 2009.
Since joining Hancock Whitney in 2005, Estrade has served in his community in a variety of ways. A Gulfport Rotary Club Paul Harris Fellow, Chris is currently the Vice President and Youth Services chair for the club. Embracing the impact of the local business community, he serves as the Chairperson of the Small Business and Economic Development Committee of the Gulfport Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. Estrade also takes an active stand within the state banking industry through his involvement with the Mississippi Bankers Association where he sits on the Mississippi Young Bankers Council, chairing the state Banker in Every Classroom Committee, which provides financial education to thousands of Mississippi students each year.
Estrade has continued to grow and embrace his community through completion of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Chamber’s Leadership Gulf Coast program, which he completed in 2018 and was awarded the One Coast Top 10 under 40 award in 2019 due to volunteer work within his community.
Chris and his wife, Betsey, reside in Pass Christian with their children, Jackson, Andrew and Noah. They are parishioners of Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church.

C. Joyce Hall practices at Watkins and Eager and was admitted to the Mississippi Bar in 1987 and the Louisiana State Bar Association in 1995. Her experience includes commercial transactions, public finance, corporate, and health care law. In 1994, Joyce was named Mississippi's Outstanding Young Lawyer and one of Mississippi's 50 Leading Business Women in 2009. She is involved in several professional and civic organizations, and following Hurricane Katrina provided pro bono assistance to victims through the Mississippi Bar.

Mel Channell is Trustmark’s Director of Corporate Security. Mr. Channell has been with Trustmark Bank for 15 years and has a total of 29 plus years of experience within the agencies in the State of Mississippi and multiple regional financial institutions. The Corporate Security Program at Trustmark Bank consists of the Cyber Security and Incident Response Program, Business Continuity Planning, Fraud Prevention Management and Investigations, Physical Security, Executive Protection, Workplace Violence, Security Training and Risk Management. Mr. Channell received a B.S. from the University of Southern Mississippi in Criminal Justice with a minor in Forensic Science and is a graduate of Mississippi Law Enforcement Officer’s Training Academy.

Wes Rouse, CCIM has called Hattiesburg his home for most of his 20 years in the banking industry and is employed with The First, A National Banking Association as Senior Vice President. Previously President of Hattiesburg Branch at Magnolia State Bank and Vice President of Premier Banking at BancorpSouth both in Hattiesburg.
Wes attended the University of Southern Mississippi for both his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and his Master of Business Administration. He has provided leadership to the Hattiesburg community through his service on a multitude of boards and committees, such as his involvement as Chamber of Commerce Division Chair for the Area Development Partnership, the Hattiesburg One Hundred board member and the ADP Leadership Pine Belt Steering Committee. He has also served as a member of the Hattiesburg Public School District Education Foundation Board, the United Way Board and the Salvation Army Advisory Board. In 2017-2018 Wes served as Mississippi Young Bankers, President and currently sits on the MBA’s Lending Committee.
Wes is also a graduate of the Wealth Management for Private Bankers from the Cannon Financial Institute and the LSU Graduate School of Banking. In 2010 he obtained his Certified Commercial Investment Member Designation (CCIM) showcasing his knowledge of commercial real estate property investment and transactions. Wes also taught several American Banker Association classes to area bankers from 2007-2015.
Wes has been a participant in the Leader’s for a New Century in 2002, Leadership Gulf Coast in 2005, Leadership Mississippi in 2011 and was awarded “Top 40 Under 40” by the MS Business Journal in 2011 and “Top 20 Under 40” by the Hattiesburg American in 2015. Wes is married to Traci Rouse and has a daughter named Rebecca.

Robin Sanderson After graduating from Millsaps College, Robin began her banking career in Orlando as a trainee and commercial real estate lender. She gained valuable bank operations experience beginning in 1996 when she joined Andersen Consulting, working on large-bank system implementations. In 2000, she returned to her hometown of Columbia, MS, where she worked as a consumer and residential mortgage lender before being named Chief Operating Officer of Citizens Bank in 2002. Robin and her husband, Sandy, have one son, Jay, who is a student at Samford University.

Art Stevens is president of retail banking at Trustmark, headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi. With more than 30 years’ experience in the financial services industry, Mr. Stevens has enjoyed the customer service side of banking in a variety of capacities and locations. He has a unique perspective on the fundamental role banks play in the development of the local community, and has been asked to speak on various related topics, from leadership to careers to the latest outlook for the economy.
Mr. Stevens earned his BS and MBA degrees from Mississippi College in Clinton, Mississippi. He completed the programs of Leadership Mississippi, the Mississippi School of Banking and the Graduate School of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University. He serves on a number of other organizational boards as well.

Jay Tindall is CEO and Chairman of the Board of Senatobia’s only home-owned community bank, Sycamore Bank. Jay is a native of Tate County. He has 2 grown children and 2 precious grandchildren, Levi and Olivia. Prior to his time at Sycamore Bank, Jay served on the Board of Directors for the Bank of Holly Springs for 13 years. He is the former CEO of GulfPak Corp in Jackson, MS. GulfPak was the 3rd largest lending software company in the US. He is also the former SVP of Wolters-Kluwer Financial Services in Minneapolis MN – the largest provider of compliance and risk management tools for banks in the US and Europe. Jay loves his hometown and community and believes community involvement is one of the most important responsibilities of the bank. When not working at the bank, Jay can be found on his family farm tending to his cattle and horses and taking care of the land.

Tom Walker of Jones Walker Law Firm in Jackson, focuses on commercial and regulatory matters in the financial services industry and has a depth of experience representing financial institutions. Prior to joining the firm, he served as Executive Vice President and Director of a $200 million community bank in Forest, Mississippi. His experience as General Counsel, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Financial Officer, and Chief Investments Officer in the financial services sector enhances his ability to provide legal services to clients.
Mr. Walker previously served as Chairman of the Attorneys Committee of the Mississippi Bankers Association and currently serves as a member of that committee. He has also served as a member of the Long Range Planning Committee and Banking Committee for the Mississippi Society of CPAs. Mr. Walker has been an active Certified Public Accountant in Mississippi since 2001, and currently serves on the Board of Governors for the Mississippi Society of CPAs. He earned his juris doctor from the University of Mississippi School of Law.
